When you are faced with a family law issue, beginning the search for a family law attorney can be a daunting task.  I encourage you to consider what you are seeking from your legal representation and to connect with me online -- links to my Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google Plus accounts are available below -- to learn about the services I provide.

Family law issues can be difficult to face and to explain, but try not to be nervous.  It is important to me that you feel comfortable discussing your life and your family with me.  I don't pass judgment; I'm here to provide support and legal advice.  Your consultation is a private, confidential meeting.  I am not permitted to reveal what is discussed during the consultation, or to even confirm that I met with you.

Scheduling a Consultation

To schedule a consultation, you can contact me by telephone, email, or through my website.  I will first ask for basic contact information about you and your opposing party.  This information will be used solely to ensure that I comply with the North Carolina Rules of Ethics in meeting with you.  I cannot disclose your information to any third party.  Once I am certain that I have no conflict of interest in meeting with you, I will work to accommodate almost any schedule.  After you schedule your consultation with me, you will receive an email with the necessary paperwork and information to bring to your appointment, so that I can maximize the time spent on you and your needs at the consultation.

The Consultation

Unless you need an alternate meeting place, your private consultation takes place in my Hickory office and usually lasts about an hour, depending upon the legal issues involved in your particular situation.

During your consultation, you will be able to give a history of your situation, and I will explain the laws of North Carolina that apply in your situation.  Your consultation will likely include the following:

  • Gathering information about you and your family;
  • Learning about your goals for your case;
  • Discussing the likelihood of accomplishing your goals;
  • Educating you about the laws that apply to your case;
  • Identifying potential issues that may arise during your case;
  • Assessing potential strengths and weaknesses of your position;
  • Providing you with an opinion about the best course of action to accomplish your goals; and
  • Providing you with a quote for legal services based upon the nature and complexity of your case.

My goal is for you to leave the consultation feeling educated about the legal issues that apply in your situation and the options available to you.  The attorney consultation is charged at a flat rate, so you know exactly how much your consultation will cost before you walk in the door.  The consultation fee is paid at the conclusion of the meeting.

After the Consultation

Your consultation is just that...a consultation.  There is no expectation or pressure to retain my services, though I would like the opportunity to assist you in moving forward with your case.  If you make the decision to hire me, we will execute a Fee Agreement that will establish an attorney-client relationship between us.  At that point, I will get to work creating a plan to move forward with your case and taking steps to protect your legal interests.  I am always happy to answer any questions you my have about the consultation process, and I look forward to meeting you soon.
